A Search for a Sodium Atmosphere around Ganymede
نویسنده
چکیده
Long-slit high-resolution spectra have revealed that Ganymede has an atmospheric sodium column density, between a distance of 7800 and 15600 km from the satellite surface, of less than 1 10 8 atoms cm ?2 , a factor of 13 times smaller than the sodium density in the atmosphere of Europa at the same distance. Assuming similar processes creating sodium on both Europa and Ganymede, we estimate that the source rate for sodium production on Ganymede should be within a factor of 2 of that on Europa. Two possibilities for the lack of detectable sodium around Ganymede are that Ganymede's surface is depleted in native sodium compared to Eu-ropa's or that Ganymede has a magnetic eld capable of standing oo impacting energetic particles.

Impact - Generated Atmospheres over Titan , Ganymede ,
The competition between impact erosion and impact supply of volatiles to planetary atmospheres can determine whether a planet or satellite accumulates an atmosphere. In the absence of other processes (e.g., outgassing), we find either that a planetary atmosphere should be thick, or that there should be no atmosphere at all. The boundary between the two extreme cases is set by the mass and veloc...
متن کاملStability of an Oxygen Atmosphere on Ganymede
Photolysis of water and subsequent escape of hydrogen can give rise to an oxygen atmosphere on Ganymede. Growth of the atmosphere may be limited by escape of fast oxygen atoms formed by photodissociation of 02. Escape of oxygen and hydrogen in an equilibrium configuration should balance net evaporation of water from the satellite's surface and the partial pressure of atmospheric O2 could be as ...

NASA's Galileo mission to Jupiter and improved Earth-based observing capabilities have allowed major advances in our understanding of Jupiter's moons Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto over the past few years. Particularly exciting findings include the evidence for internal liquid water oceans in Callisto and Europa, detection of a strong intrinsic magnetic field within Ganymede, discovery of h...
متن کاملNear-infrared Brightness of the Galilean Satellites Eclipsed in Jovian Shadow: a New Technique to Investigate Jovian Upper Atmosphere
We have discovered that Europa, Ganymede and Callisto are bright around 1.5 μm even when not directly lit by sunlight, based on observations from the Hubble Space Telescope and the Subaru Telescope. The observations were conducted with non-sidereal tracking on Jupiter outside of the field of view to reduce the stray light subtraction uncertainty due to the close proximity of Jupiter. Their ecli...
متن کاملThe Magnetospheric Plasma–driven Evolution of Satellite Atmospheres
Atmospheric loss induced by an incident plasma, often called atmospheric sputtering, can significantly alter the volatile inventories of solar system bodies. Based on the present atmospheric sputtering rate, the net loss of nitrogen from Titan in the last 4 Gyr was small, consistent with Titan retaining a component of its primordial atmosphere. However, atmospheric sputtering by the magnetosphe...
